Well, Labor Day weekend has come and gone in a flash — as is usually the case with three-day weekends. How was yours? I spent Saturday with Liz going Target-hopping as we searched the local stores for a particular pair of sweatpants in a certain size. Talk about dedication. We ended up going to 13 Targets over the past five days. Other than obsessively checking Target, though, I did spend the weekend catching up with friends over brunch, barbecuing, swimming, reading — basically trying to soak up as much summer as possible before the real craving for fall begins.

Oh, wait. It already has.

This weekend was all about comfort while still looking like I cared about how I stepped out of the apartment, so for me, this means a good button-up blouse. My collection is quite extensive, and I usually put these on hold until the cooler months kick in. But I couldn’t wait, so I paired mine with the only denim shorts I wore all summer and a comfortable pair of metallic loafers.

Kimono

We’re entering the transition between summer and fall, when all I want to do is two things: 1) wear cozy fall clothes, and 2) complain about not getting to wear said clothes because temps are still in the 80s. My temporary solution is summer-appropriate clothes in neutral, fall colors. I’ve only pulled out this kimono a few times this summer, but I love it more every time I wear it. I never thought I’d be a “kimono girl” (you know exactly the type of person I’m describing — admit it), and even though I don’t fit under the category of super artistic person or your wacky art teacher in middle school, I love that a kimono can still fit into my wardrobe and my personal style and still feel like me.

Staple shorts

Back when I bought these shorts from Old Navy in the spring, I had no idea how much rotation they’d get from week to week. They’ve been on all the trips I’ve taken this summer and seem to go with so many tops I own. I’ve paired them with a crop topa graphic T-shirt and a printed sweatshirt. Needless to say, their cost-per-wear was well worth it (especially considering they were so affordable in the first place).

How was your weekend? It was a good one for me! The rain held off for the baseball game and concert Friday, then Saturday was spent at the downtown farmers market, grabbing some coffee, doing a little work, spending time by the pool, and getting my birthday celebrations underway a few days early.

Button-Up: Banana Republic | Denim: Old Navy | Espadrilles: Denim & Supply | Bag: Pour la Victoire | Watch: American Eagle | Bracelets: Forever 21, Banana Republic | Sunglasses: American Eagle | Lips: Revlon’s Blasé Apricot | Nails: Deborah Lippman’s She Bop and Happy Birthday

When it comes to dressing in a snap, I keep things straightforward and simple. For instance, yesterday the carpet-cleaning guy stopped by my apartment while I was still in my pajamas (oh, the perils of working from home), so I threw this outfit on before heading out the door to work at a coffee shop for the afternoon. I haven’t worn my chambray blouse for quite awhile, so I paired it with the first pants I could grab out of my closet and the easiest shoes I could slip on.

We’ve had the perfect summer weather here in Omaha lately. Yesterday, the high only reached 72, and Liz, Jeni and I took advantage of the break in heat to catch Shakespeare on the Green (you can see pics on my Instagram). We packed a cooler full of cheese, crackers, olives, chocolate and wine and spent last night watching the complete works of Shakespeare (abridged). It was hilarious, and if you ever get the chance to experience something like that in your city, take advantage!

After tearing my last black maxi skirt and being without one for a couple of years, I finally found one at Target that was both inexpensive but well-fitting. Score! And Old Navy lately has been killing it in the graphic tee department.

I’ll see you on the flip side of the long weekend. Happy Independence Day!
