Staple of the month: May

I decided to venture into something slightly different with this month’s staple; rather than doing just a top, a bottom or a dress, I went with a layering piece that I have the feeling will be used more than just four times this month. I refused to do the denim vest trend for a while, just because it reminded me so much of my childhood. Then I thought, Why should I fear my childhood? I had a good childhood, filled with 90s backpacks, flower-printed jeans and — yes — denim vests. So here’s to embracing your childhood and ending up with a piece that is quickly becoming a weekly layering piece.

Fresh air

I bought this vest in December at H&M, mostly because I was looking for a piece that would breathe fresh air into pieces I already had. A lot of money can be spent on new blouses and sweaters that only get worn once or twice while they’re in your closet, and I’ve been making a conscious decision not to spend money on pieces like that. This vest drew my eye because I knew it was something I could wear multiple ways throughout all seasons and all weather. I think it’ll be a key layering piece, especially come spring.

Staple of the month: January

Last week was crazily cold and windy — all week, it seemed. So I apologize for the chaos happening in these photos. But you can get the gist of the idea of this outfit (even if the photos aren’t perfect). I love the addition of my blazer (see how I’ve worn it this month here, here and here), but I think that without my blazer and with ankle booties or even wedges that this outfit would be perfection come spring!

Tune in next week to see what February’s staple of the month is!

Glossy inspiration: Country jaunt

I love how my socks peep over the tops of my boots. Surprisingly, I was actually a little too warm in this look. We had some seriously warm weather recently, so I couldn’t get away with wearing a knitted scarf or hat like I wanted to (like the cute ones in the editorial spread above). But I imagine that in the next few months, I’ll be able to pull off this same look again from February’s InStyle magazine — knitted accessories and all.

Happy weekend, friends!

Red and green

Blazer: Gap | Sweater: Forever 21 | Denim: American Rag via Goodwill | Boots: Sole Society | Hat: H&M | Bracelets: Forever 21/My grandma’s/Lauren Conrad via Kohl’s/Yael Brown (c/o)

Yes, it’s after Christmas, but that doesn’t mean red and green can’t be worn together, right? Rather than pair an outfit full of neutrals with a neutral hat, I went for the unexpected. I was inspired by the pop of color on the underside of this blazer’s collar. And if you ask me, the snow only makes this outfit better.
