In twos

When I find something I love, I buy it in multiple colors. Some people are totally against this strategy, but I just think it’s smart shopping. Take, for example, this shirt and these shorts. I bought two of each — this shirt in navy blue and olive green and these shorts in navy blue and hot pink (which you’ll see tomorrow). I was pleasantly surprised by the Joe Fresh for JC Penney line, and the fit of these shorts (only $19) is perfect. I was also drawn to the faux leather sleeves on this shirt (only $13 from F21) — a small detail to toughen up an otherwise plain shirt.

Windy days get me. Sometimes windy-day photos look great, and other times my eyes are squinty and water and my outfit is going crazy. This day was one of those unmanageable windy days. Luckily, my accessories decided to cooperate in their photos. Orange is quickly becoming a prominent color in my wardrobe; it’s one of those wildcards you think will only last for a season, but it ends up becoming a staple. And when it’s paired with navy, I’m especially OK with orange making its home in my wardrobe.

Staple of the month: May

I decided to venture into something slightly different with this month’s staple; rather than doing just a top, a bottom or a dress, I went with a layering piece that I have the feeling will be used more than just four times this month. I refused to do the denim vest trend for a while, just because it reminded me so much of my childhood. Then I thought, Why should I fear my childhood? I had a good childhood, filled with 90s backpacks, flower-printed jeans and — yes — denim vests. So here’s to embracing your childhood and ending up with a piece that is quickly becoming a weekly layering piece.

About town

One of the perks of working from home is being able to be portable and explore different areas of the city. My favorite areas to explore include some sort of coffee with free wifi so I can continue to work, and my roommate and I found this adorable European bakery in midtown that we’ll most certainly be back to visit. Seeing as how spring arrived (finally) last week, I decided to take this flowy illusion maxi skirt (only $20 at Target!) out for a spin. I love the color!

Happy feet

Certain items in your closet just make you smile, and these shoes are one of those items for me. The colors are a nice surprise when you look down at the ground, and these are a nice spin on a classic cap-toe flat. Obviously I centered the rest of my outfit around these shoes, as is only right when you’re wearing something that’s such a mood-lifter. What item in your closet makes you smile?
