I’m all about that base … coat, that is

IMG_0354 IMG_0365

I love painting my own nails; there’s something so therapeutic about it. However, I am the worst about picking at my nails after even the tiniest chip occurs. I’ve finally landed on the perfect routine that keeps my nails chip-free for at least seven days … no joke. And it has nothing to do with the colored polish and everything to do with the prep beforehand, the base and the top coats.

To ensure chip-free nails, I use polish remover even if my nails don’t have polish to remove on them. Then I use the buffing side of a buffer block to (very gently) create a rougher surface for the polish to stick to.

For my base coats, I flip between Essie’s Millionails and Sally Hansen’s Hard as Nails. This keeps my nails healthy and strong, despite the wear and tear of polish. After letting that dry, I apply a coat or two of color polish (currently digging Deborah Lippman’s Good Girl Gone Bad and Formula X’s Iconic). Then finally, the top coat. I just recently discovered Seche Vite Fast Dry Top Coat. Guys — this top coat is a game-changer, a holy grail. This stuff works wonders and has probably made the biggest difference in how long my manicure lasts.

I’d love to hear your tips for making your manis last as long as possible! Let me know in the comments. Have a good weekend!

Clean and simple

Often my favorite outfits are those that are clean and simple — and the best time for that kind of dressing is summer. During the cooler months, I want to layer and pile blazer on top of vest on top of shirt. But in summer, I’m forced to keep things simple, and nothing says that better than a T-shirt and jeans. The way to keep it interesting? A pop of color and print, along with updated jeans in white. (It is post-Memorial Day, after all, if you’re into the old-school fashion rules.)

City bikes

Happy Monday! Oh, wait … it’s Tuesday. My four-day weekend/vacation has really set me up for a confusing week, but it was well worth it. Stay tuned later this week for more pics from my trip to Southern Utah to visit a few of the national parks.

As far as my outfit goes, I know I can always count on some shopping during a trip to Utah to spruce up my wardrobe. This top from Macy’s was less than $10, and it makes me want to hop on a bike and take a ride around the city. (I wish I had room in my apartment for a bike — here’s hoping it happens one day! A fold-up bike is on my wish list at the moment.)

Spending spring in stripes

Just a little early-morning shopping trip. This spring, I plan on living in stripes … along with these destroyed boyfriend jeans. Isn’t this necklace fun? I found it at Francesca’s for $10. Score!

Happy Wednesday! This week is flying by. It’s been a busy one, but a productive one (the best kind).

Lippy

I love cheeky things (pun intended), so when this scarf was sitting in my local TJ Maxx just waiting to be picked up — on clearance, no less — I couldn’t wait to wear it. I haven’t been wearing many scarves lately, but the lip print on this one was too fun to ignore!
