Nothing like a cheerful red blazer to brighten up a Monday! After going on the hunt this month for the perfect plaid scarf, this Forever 21 one fit the bill (sold out online, unfortunately). There are some other great options out there, though, like Zara and Target if you’re looking for a similar scarf for an affordable price.
How was your weekend? I was at a retreat for most of the weekend and got to see Rachel McAdam’s new movie, About Time. So. Good.
All this outfit needs are some colorful fall leaves! Our leaves have been very slow in changing, and when these photos were taken this past weekend, the leaves were just beginning to get colorful here in Omaha. When the leaves start to change, I find myself dressing more and more in warm, earthy fall-like tones: mustard, cognac and navy blue. Throw in a hint of tweed and wool, and I’m full-on fall-ready!
I love buying pre-season clothes because you essentially get two “shopping” experiences: the first happens when you buy the item from the store, and the second happens when the weather finally cooperates and you’ve forgotten all the goodies you bought a few weeks earlier, only to discover that one item amidst the others in your closet. It really is like a second purchasing experience (but without spending more money – so does that mean I’m saving money?).
All kidding aside, this sweater was one of those pre-season purchases waiting to be worn once the weather cooled down. Rather than pair it with something expected (chambray or a white blouse), I went for a rich jewel tone. I love the result and think I might try layering a polka-dot blouse underneath next time.
I don’t know what it is about long sweater cardigans that I love more: the fact that it’s almost like wearing a blanket all day or that the sweater doubles as a coat during these mild fall days. Rather than keeping things too comfortable, I went for edgy with motorcycle jeans and my favorite boots of the season. Come much cooler weather, expect a similar look with a warm wool beanie, a scarf and more layers.

I love a rainy day in October. These days make me want to curl up under a blanket with a good book and a warm cup of tea, coffee or cider — and that’s what happened this weekend. I had a work-filled, low-key weekend due to a huge project, but the cool, cloudy weather made going to a local coffee shop to warm up absolutely necessary.
So when the day turns rainy, I turn to earthy colors and layers. As usual, my chambray blouse is my number-one layering top. Mustard yellow and olive green were meant to be, and some fringe booties and a leopard umbrella are just what is needed to brighten up a gray day.
