This time of year is the most difficult in terms of loving my closet. I’m ready for spring and lighter layers, but the reality is that it’s still very much winter outside. So when I’m dressing during this transitional season, I’m sticking to what I love most: neutrals and textures. How do you make the most of your closet during this transition from winter to spring?

The golden hour

Recently I’ve been drawn to any piece that has interesting texture — and this sweater/jacket combo was right up my alley. From the interesting yarn they used to knit each row with a bit of silver thread here and there to the leather trim around neck and zipper, this piece just called my name. For even more added interest, I paired it with snakeskin flats and a chunky necklace. Texture overload … but I like it.

Comfort and ease

I’ve had this vest for a couple of months, and it has been waiting for the perfect moment to be worn. The contrast of slouchy with the structured vest works so well for me, and I’m thinking these pants might become a weekend staple.

Mixing it

This, for me, is simplicity at its best. Classic black and white with a mix of texture (lace and snakeskin)? You just can’t go wrong.

My parents stopped by my apartment yesterday, and it was such a treat for me to be able to show them around Omaha. We, of course, took the obligatory tour of downtown and the quaint shops down at the Old Market, as well as stopped by a few of my favorite parts of the city — including my go-to place for cupcakes.

One of the things I want to work on in 2013 is layering. My problem is that with too many layers, I get too warm; for me, the key to layering is doing so with light layers. For this look, it’s all cotton except for my merino wool cardigan. It ended up being the perfect mix — all with a lot of help and inspiration from this pin
